If you want to know more about how the city developed from the missionary castle of Hammaburg into the proud Hanseatic city and proverbial “gateway to the world” of today, the Hamburg Museum is the place to go. The museum’s building on Holstenwall was opened in 1922. Today it is the home of Germany’s largest collection of city history. The visit will be followed by a boat trip on Lake Alster.
As visitors progress through the medieval exhibition of “Hamme, Fortress and Hanseatic City” to the exhibition of “The Port - a Major Driving Force”, they take a trip back in time through the history of Hamburg all the way to the city’s development in the 20th century. Numerous exhibits covering central themes such as shipping, port and emigration via Hamburg, period flats with furniture typical of the various eras, fashion through the centuries, music and theatre history and the section dedicated to “Jews in Hamburg” give a comprehensive overview of the history of Hamburg.

After the museum visit you will be whisked off to the water. An Alster pleasure boat will take you round the Outer Alster [Außenalster] close to the shore with a beautiful view of the city and its many church spires and bridges. Lunch will be served while you are gliding by green banks that are home to many water bird species and rare plants.

In the afternoon you will return to Jungfernstieg, from where you can take off on a shopping spree or board a shuttle bus that will take you back to the Marriott Hotel Hamburg.

  • See the shuttle bus departure times in the conference brochure and in the conference hotels.
