Growth in Cruise Shipping: Hamburg opens a third Cruise Terminal

"Full speed ahead" for Hamburg as a cruise ship location. This year Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) opens another cruise terminal. Cruise Center Steinwerder is the third cruise ship terminal, following Hamburg Cruise Center in HafenCity and Cruise Center Altona. In January HPA celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the new terminal building, marking a further important milestone for the planned opening of Cruise Center Steinwerder in June 2015.

In recent years Hamburg has developed into one of the most popular cruise ship destinations in Europe. The opening of the Cruise Center in Steinwerder is the next step to meet the shipping lines needs for higher performance and increased terminal capacity for the future. The new terminal building at Kronprinzkai, Steinwerder is built on an area the size of two football fields. After going into operation it will be able to deal with 8,000 passengers per cruise ship call. To make sure that luggage handling runs smoothly the embarkation and disembarkation areas will be separate. After finishing the shell of the building on time, work on the interior fixtures and fittings of the approx.10,000-square-meter terminal building can now begin.

Growth in the cruise business will also be featured during the 29th IAPH World Ports Conference. There is a session on cruise shipping on Thursday 4 June. One of the issues to be considered is the question of the ‘wow effect’ for marketing cruises, the shipping lines' requirements from cruise ports, and why growth in cruises is reaching its limits at some locations. All details of the Cruise Shipping session are here.
